Farmers got to see first-hand the impressive capabilities of the biggest agricultural drone in South Africa, from efficient spraying to advanced field management. THE BERG SHOW 2025 & the eston show 2025

Hummingbird Technologies was thrilled to attend the The Berg 2025 as well as The Eston Show 2025, showcasing the latest in precision agriculture technology. RIPENING OF SUGARCANE | AGRONOMY - SASRI

In this article we will discuss about the ripening of sugarcane. The ultimate economic product of sugarcane is not the seed but the sugar, which is stored in the stalk and cannot be seen by naked eye. Sugarcane maturity, therefore, cannot be judged by the considerations applicable to grain crops Accumulation of sugar in the stalk begins soon after completion of elongation phase when glucose produced during photosynthesis is not utilized mainly for further growth but stored largely in the stalk as sucrose.

ELDANA CONTOL ON SUGARCANE - SASRI

Crop management practices. Insecticide use The insecticide Fastac (SC) can be used to treat selected carryover crops to reduce the impact eldana can have on such crops. Fastac should be applied eight times, once every two weeks at a rate of 200 ml product in 350 litres of water, per hectare, per application over the period August to November. Generally if the value for % Internodes Bored or % Stalk Length Red is above 3, the use of Fastac can be economically justified (refer to the section on farm surveys). Fastac is registered for both ground and aerial application.

SUGARCANE NEWSLETTER - SASRI

Prepare for a dry summer! SASRI has recently released Extension Newsletters alerting growers to the high probability of a dry summer. This follows a prediction by the World Meteorological Organisation of a full El Nino phenomenon developing by September 2023. El Nino is linked to below-average rainfall and increased temperatures in South Africa. Eldana infestations intensify during periods of below-normal rainfall. Yellow sugarcane aphid (YSA) also thrives when the crop is stressed. The newsletters provide detailed recommendations (customised separately for the coastal and midlands regions) on limiting the impact of these pests through a range of field practices.
